| Description: | "Reference & Commercial Sea Time: Julian Gruening 12 - 04 - 08 With Bay of Islands Overnight Cruises Ltd, aboard the vessel ‘the Rock’ Julian first contacted me via the internet, explaining that he wanted to get experience on the sea & also in the tourism industry. He also wanted to work in a English speaking country so that he could perfect his English communication skills. Julian’s qualifying commercial sea time was in a live aboard position with Bay of Islands Overnight cruises in which he worked as a deckhand and activities organizer. Area: Bay of Islands/Brett - New Zealand Enclosed is or company brochure which shows our vessels and the many activities we do, Julian was able to run all aspects of this very diverse & customer orientated cruise, where all activities were safety briefed & guided. Our operation offers a great training platform and a very wide range of learning & skills. The Main Vessel (refer attached brochure) Aboard the 18m vessel ‘the Rock’ Julian was involved in steering, night watches, operating all the machinery from Hydraulic anchor winches to daily, weekly, & monthly checks. Aboard this vessel was other small tenders, outboards, generators etc, which he serviced or helped to service & operates daily. Julian also spent many hours doing vessel maintenance. Support Vessel & Tenders The vessel also operated a fully surveyed 25ft tender powered by a 70hp Suzuki 4 stroke outboard motor & a 13ft rigid tender with a 2.2hp Suzuki, which operated a busy schedule from ship to shore drop offs, pick up of passengers & stores, water taxi work, taking customers fishing, snorkeling, general scenic tours. Julian was involved in the full operation, steering & maintenance checks such as fueling, oil and water checks, filter, spark plug replacements etc of this vessel. Operational Responsibilities The operational side of our cruise involved looking after the safety & welfare of up to 36 guests over a 24hr period, during our cruise our international clients are taken through many different activities from night kayaking trips, fishing, snorkeling, diving (refer brochure). Our whole cruise operated on a names basis with our customers in which Julian would remember all names. During each activity he fully briefed all customers & was responsible for overseeing these activities. Another big responsibility aboard was stocking and organizing the vessel from fuel, food stocks, meals, first aid, jobs and repairs lists & also training & overseeing food preparation & cleaning crew. Julian got himself to a skill level were he took on the job of introducing & training junior crew. Julian is a fully qualified IT & Software development specialist; he is a mature and well qualified adult & is of sound and sober character. Julian is honest, hard working, thinks ahead and is a great asset to any team whether he leads it or is part of it. Julian is of sound judgment and is of sober character. Julian will make a safe & capable skipper and I wish him the best with his skipper’s course. Julian has been a big asset to our business, his English is excellent & he has gained his divers qualifications. Commercial Sea time to date: for the whole period from 13 – 9 -2006 to 12- 4-2008 (205 days) " |
