| Description: | Hi! My name is Katie Fitzpatrick and I’m contacting you about a position as a deck hand or a galley assistant on your charter ship. I have grown up on houseboats and have had a deep love of boating instilled in me through my family. When I was about 4 years old my parents sold our pontoon boat we’d had for years and bought a 32 ft. Nauti-Line houseboat. We enjoyed that boat on Center Hill Lake in Tennessee for roughly 12 years. The longest period of my life was the six weeks between selling The Kid and buying our next boat, a 50 ft Gibson which we named Therapy. We moved Therapy from Berkley Lake in Kentucky down to the Cumberland River that fall and stayed on the Cumberland in and around Nashville, Tennessee that winter. The following spring we moved Therapy onto Center Hill Lake, a beautiful but land-locked lake, where we stayed for about 10 years until this fall when we decided to try the river system again for traveling purposes. This fall, my parents and I have been fortunate enough to cruise around Fort Loudon Lake, up the Tellico and Little Tennessee Rivers and be a part of the Vol Navy (a University of Tennessee tradition). Through these experiences I have really discovered a love of traversing the waterways and am excited to explore further. Being part of a three person crew, I am used to having to pull my own weight, helping with docking and mooring, setting fenders, organizing and handling lines as well as galley consolidation, cooking and organization. In addition to my houseboat experience, I’ve been a waterski instructor on Percy Priest Lake in Nashville, TN summers of 1999 – 2001. With this job I was in charge of upkeep of three new Mastercraft Pro-star 190s as well as teaching groups of children 6 – 15 years old to waterski, slalom, wakeboard, etc. With this job we trailered all three boats twice daily, cleaned the boats top to bottom weekly, waxed them bi-weekly, changed the oil and the transmission fluid in regular intervals and did minor repairs to speedometer meters, props, etc. I also received a waterskiing scholarship to Eckerd College, which allowed me to attend college. While at Eckerd, in St. Petersburg, FL, I took a beginners sailing class for certification and was involved in a regatta from L.A. to Catalina, CA. In the regatta and ensuing adventures, I helped crew (with 8 other people, 5 of which had no boat experience at all) a 55 ft. custom Bruce Roberts Ketch for 3 days. I hope this letter gives you an adequate overview of my boating experience so that I may be considered for the positions offered. My ultimate goal is to learn about handling a larger-sized ship and develop a better working knowledge of the requirements to navigate open and in-land waters. Part of this is so that I will be more comfortable once I own my own boat and to become confident with my abilities to upkeep a livable boat. I feel I would be a positive addition to your crew and am eager to learn all aspects of the boating world. Sincerely, Katie Fitzpatrick (615)568-0356 fitzpafk@hotmail.com |
